How important are visuals and videos in e-learning?
Democratisation of education has been one
of the biggest gifts of the technological revolution. So much so that anyone in
any part of the world can access any information and the structure to this
learning has been given through the process of e-learning. E-learning is an all-encompassing term that
covers all forms of education that is provided online. This includes courses,
classes and even tests that are available on the said platform. A very big part
of this e-learning happens through videos and visuals and we will illustrate
how:
1.
Better explanation- One of the
problems with e-learning is that there is no physical contact between the
teacher and the student. Anything that is taught needs to have a pronounced
explanation and one of the best ways to make this explanation satisfactory is
through the use of visuals and videos. It helps break away from the barrier
that the sole use of literary medium brings up and creates a better interface
for the transfer of information.
2.
Helps in retention- Studies
have time and again proven that the visual form of any information stays firmer
in the memory than just texts. So, if a student accesses the information
through e-learning, he will retain it better if it is presented to him with the
help of visuals and videos such as graphs, images and so on. Coupled with the
advantage of a better understanding of the subject, this makes e-learning a
very enriching experience and not short of attending a physical class.
3.
Access to a classroom-like
atmosphere- One of the biggest advantages of using videos on your e-learning
platforms is that you can actually put up videos of professors teaching a
subject and the student has a classroom experience. This is the best use of
e-learning as it breaks away the physical restrictions that restrict her.
4.
It breaks monotony- Constantly
reading textual material that too on screen can lead to boredom and loss of
interest in students. Visuals and videos provide the much needed break from
texts and help in orientation and better concentration. It makes learning fun,
interesting and engaging.
